California vs. Paris: Frontierland Part 2

In Anaheim, Frontierland has five very distinct shops (Bonanza Outfitters, Pioneer Mercantile, Silver Spur, The Spirit of Pocahontas Shop and Westward Ho Trading Company) whereas there is really only one store in the Frontierland of Disneyland Paris. This is the Thunder Mesa Mercantile Building, although it is split into three separate parts: Tobias Norton & Sons, Bonanza Outfitters and Eureka Mining Supplies. To the untrained eye (e.g. mine) the three sections seem interchangeable, except for having different entrances, but perhaps the differentiation is to help out those who work in the park’s sales department… or maybe it is a cynical ploy to get more potential customers to visit/re-visit the store.

Arguably there is another sales point of sorts in DLP’s Frontierland: Big Thunder Photographers. As well as this being where one can purchase the on-ride snaps from Big Thunder Mountain, it also sells T-shirts, bottled beverages and plush toys, albeit currently only of Woody and Jesse.

Whilst there is no shop named after Anaheim’s Silver Spur in Disneyland Paris, there is the Silver Spur Steakhouse, a restaurant which, according to the Land’s art director Jeff Burke, once featured various watercolors, etchings and oil paintings by the likes of Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), Edward Borein (1872-1945) and Charles Russell (1864-1926) so as to set the scene of “lavish Victorian ambience… accentuated with masterpieces of western art”. In 1994 however, these were removed and replaced with printed copies.

Whilst the Silver Spur Steakhouse is a table service restaurant, the other eateries in the Land are all generally considered to be “Quick Meal” experiences: Cowboy Cookout Barbecue, Fuente del Oro Restaurante, Last Chance Café and The Lucky Nugget Saloon.

The restaurants in Anaheim’s Frontierland are Stage Door Café, Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante, River Belle Terrace and The Golden Horseshoe Saloon.

The Lucky Nugget is (in many ways) France’s answer to The Golden Horseshoe, in that (as well as being an eatery) it has two stories of cabaret-style audience seating and a stage which has been used for a variety of different types of acts over the years. The capacity in France’s restaurant is higher, and the shows tend to be more music based than an equal split of music and comedy (which is perhaps down to the language barrier) and both have had periods where they have been merely used for character dining, but both have tremendous amounts of atmosphere, theming and history.

It was August 1969 and I had just turned 9 the month before. Summer was rapidly coming to an end so, as a treat, my Dad let me go with my summer camp group on a day trip to the Magic Kingdom. We were scheduled to leave early the morning of the 12th which was a Tuesday. We would spend the entire day at the park and return early the morning of the 13th. Little did I know that this would be the most memorable trip I would ever take to Disneyland.

In spite of the time that has passed, there are memories about that trip that will stay with me forever. The scent of orange trees that hung in the air as we drove into the valley. Driving into Anaheim, clamoring to see the first glimpse of the Matterhorn. Arriving at the front of the park, hearing that familiar train whistle from the Disneyland locomotive, while the Monorail could be seen gliding on it’s regular trip around the perimeter of the park. Even after I have grown and raised my own family, when we vacation in The Magic Kingdom, we still look to see who will get that first glimpse of the Matterhorn, and now, the spires of Space Mountain. But when you’re 9, everyone seems to tower around you; add to that one very crowded amusement park and you have the makings for a real adventuresome trip. As we boarded the Greyhound bus, there were about 25 kids and several chaperones. As we arrived at the park and all converged just beyond the ticket booths, it occurred to me that having that many kids trying to decide what to do is a lot like a traffic jam. But in spite of that there’s something really exciting about going to Disneyland with a whole group of kids. Being as democratic as we could be, everyone took turns picking the rides that we would go on. Most popular ride almost always gets first priority. At that time rides like the Matterhorn and Pirates of the Caribbean were top-flight. This was the era before Space, Splash and Thunder Mountain. Walking through the park other guests could be overheard talking about the newest attraction that had just opened that day. All around I heard phrases like, “Haunted House”, “Spook House”, and of course it’s official name, The Haunted Mansion. Hearing this piqued my curiosity. As exciting as it was, I felt a certain amount of trepidation. What exactly was this ride like that I kept hearing about, was it scary or was it fun? Ironically, when Walt Disney’s passed away, this was one of the first attractions to be opened after his death and for the Imagineeers, trying to decide the scope of the ride was a major obstacle.

So one day i was thinking about the cost of building attractions at Disneyland. It occurred to me that maybe if we convert the cost of some of the older attractions (including the park itself) to 2011 dollars it might be interesting. So I took the top 20 most expensive attractions and converted their construction cost to 2011 dollars and the sorted them most to least expensive. The results were interesting to me. Here is what I came up with:

Year Built  Cost To Build Attraction 2011 Dollars
1995  $110 million  Indiana Jones Adventure, Temple Of The Forbidden Eye $160.3 million
1989  $85 million  Splash Mountain $151.8 million
1955  $17 million  Disneyland $140.8 million
1969  $17 million  Haunted Mansion $102.8 million
1966  $15 million  New Orleans Square $102.5 million
2007  $70 million  Finding Nemo: Submarine Voyage $75.6 million
1977  $20 million  Space Mountain $73.1 million
1987  $30 million  Star Tours $58.4 million
1967  $8 million  Carousel Of Progress $53.1 million
1967  $8 million  Pirates Of The Caribbean $53.1 million
1979  $16 million  Big Thunder Mountain Railroad $48.7 million
1972  $8 million  Bear Country $42.4 million
2003  $30 million  Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh $36.4 million
1986  $17 million  Captain EO $34.3 million
1997  $20 million  Light Magic $27.8 million
1959  $2.5 million  Submarine Voyage $19 million
1960  $2.5 million  Natures Wonderland $18.7 million
2008  $15 million  Innoventions Dream Home $15.6 million
1959  $1.5 million  Matterhorn $11.4 million
1959  $1 million  Monorail $7.6 million

Of course Indiana Jones is number 1 but look how close Splash Mountain is.  I guess the real question is "Will Disney ever build a $100 attraction again for Disneyland Park?" We can only hope.

I was looking at DLDHistory one day and realizing the huge amount of content that we have that no other site has. The problem is trying to sort through all of it and put together a nice time line of the History of Disneyland. I also watched most of the Disneyland Historical DVD's available, official and unofficial. None of the DVD's seem to have the complete history of Disneyland including backstage photos and information about deaths and injuries, rare video clips etc.

This project has taken over 3 years to compile.

We have created a full length Disneyland History DVD. The DVD is a 12 disc set  covering the full history of Disneyland. The discs are available individually or as a box set. The DVD's contain all attraction openings, parades, deaths, injuries, trivia, backstage photos and lots more. To my knowledge no DVD has ever been created with this type of content.

Our Gold members receive a 50% discount.

We offer previews for each disc on our YouTube Channel.
