California vs. Paris: Frontierland
Hugh Allison
Senior Columnist

Looking back at the articles I have written comparing the two Disneylands closest to my heart (California and Paris) I realize that the only Land in the Paris version of Disneyland Park which I haven’t covered in any detail yet is Frontierland. [The only elements of this Land I have looked at, to date, are Tom Sawyer Island and the Railroad].

With regards to Anaheim, I also haven’t covered Critter Country, New Orleans Square or Mickey’s Toontown, but this is as they have no equivalents in Europe.

Several Imagineers I have spoken to about the creation of the Paris Frontierland have referred to it as “Westernland” (the name given to the version in Tokyo, due to “Frontier” being a term not thought to be as recognizable by its expected guests). Although this could on occasion have been them getting their resorts muddled, there was a period of time when this name was considered for the area of the France park, although the Land’s Art Director, Jeff Burke, claims to have been adamant from day one that “Frontierland” was the only name which should or could be used.

Personally, I feel the theming of Frontierland in Paris to be one of the most thorough and in-depth, especially in terms of a coherent backstory linking all of its parts (including the toilets themed to local undertaker J. Nutterville), even though I suspect some sections of the storyline have been retrofitted. However, over time, I feel additions and changes to the Land have contradicted any semblance of storyline as has an over-reliance on cartoon characters.

One example of an element of the Paris Frontierland’s backstory which is abided by less now than in the park’s early years is the distinction between the “rich” half of the Land (Thunder Mesa) and the “poor” half (Cottonwood Creek, sometimes known as Critter Corral after a now-defunct petting zoo in the area). Likewise, although the Land is still the hub of the resort’s Halloween activities, it is no longer split during that celebration into “Trickland” and “Treatland”.

Although this year’s Halloween celebrations in the Paris resort were more minimal than usual (and also more Main Street based, with the majority of the budget going to new ghosts for that Land) it was still the area with Pumpkin-Head mannequins, Scarecrow themed musicians and the meet-and-greet with Jack Skellington and his wife Sally Finkelstein-Skellington.

In previous years, for that time period, the Land has also featured face-painting, mummified ships, spooky dinner shows and occasionally an overall re-name/re-theme to “Halloweenland”. More free sweets seemed to have been given out in the past too.

Although not to the same extent, Christmas is also celebrated in Frontierland more than in any of the other Lands in Paris, with seasonal stage shows, reindeer, Santa’s workshop and a chance to meet the big guy himself.

Other than perhaps during the Halloween/Christmas celebrations, both Frontierlands are generally set in the mid to late 1800s. They both feature a generous smattering of props from the era, a smoking area and a shooting gallery.

We are having a Black Friday Sale! Black Friday refers to the day after Thanksgiving here in the states and dates back to 1966:

JANUARY 1966 -- "Black Friday" is the name which the Philadelphia Police Department has given to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. It is not a term of endearment to them. But you do not need to live in the states to take advantage of our sale. For 12 hours only: 8:00AM PDT until 8:00PM PDT 11/23/2012 you can save 40% on all account upgrades. All you need to do is upgrade your account during our 12 hour sale and on the last screen you will receive a 40% discount!

That's right you can upgrade from a Guest Account to a coveted GOLD Account for only $42 . Upgrade to a Deluxe Account for a ridiculous low cost of only $3!

NOTE: Discount only applies to account upgrade does not apply to merchandise like DVD, Lanyards etc.

DLDHistory offices will be closed for Thanksgiving. But Black Friday morning we will be in the office activating accounts as quickly as possible.

We have added lots of new Disney Character Email Names! Including characters from the recently released Wreck It Ralph.  If you upgrade your account to have a Gold account you will be able to choose one at no charge! If you would like to upgrade your Guest, Deluxe, Premium, Silver or Bronze Account to include a Disney Character Email name then CLICK HERE. Mikhail C. a wonderful DLDHistory member has located an article that ran in the Burbank Daily Review in 1952 about Disneyland being built in Burbank We have reproduced the article here and on the site:

"Walt Disney Make-Believe Land Project Planned Here"

$1,500,000 Dreamland to Rise On Site in Burbank

Thursday, March 27, 1952

* * * * * *

"Disneyland," a spectacular world of make-believe made reality by the genius of famed cartoon producer Walt Disney is being planned as a $1,500,000 development on Disney Studio property at Riverdale and Buena Vista.

Tentative approval has been given by the City Board of Parks and Recreations for use of land leased by the city lying adjacent to the studio property as a picnic and parking site.

"Disneyland will be something of a fair, an exhibition, a playground, a community center, a museum of living facts and a showplace of beauty and magic," according to a description by its creator.

Various scenes of Americana, rides in a "Space Ship" and submarine, zoo of miniature animals and exhibit halls "will give meaning to the pleasure of the children--and pleasure to the experience of adults," Disney said.

Disneyland and its activities will be transmitted by television throughout the country. A complete television center with theater, stages, sets and technical equipment are planned.

The development, Disney said "will focus a new interest upon Burbank, Los Angeles and Southern California through the medium of television and other exploitation."

Designed primarily for children, Disneyland is not intended as a commercial venture, park board members have assured. The facilities are to be "instantly available" for youth groups, Parent-Teacher Associations and other organizations devoted to civic and social welfare.

"The nostalgia of the past" will be displayed by means of scenes of a small midwestern town at the turn of the century. "Granny's Farm," the Erie canal, an old Mississippi paddle-wheeler, and a frontier Western town.

A practical side of the displays is planned through supervised children's programs, classes, and demonstrations in the little fairgrounds and exhibits of arts and crafts designed to supplement school work.

Disney craftsmen, renowned for creating a fantasy of characters and scene through films will be employed in bringing in substance to the Disneyland plans.

Disney, whose cartoon studio here has already made Burbank world-famous began producing animated cartoons in Kansas City after World War I. His creation, Mickey Mouse, which brought cartoons to a permanent place among motion picture production is still perhaps the best known of all cartoon characters.

Always a pioneer, Disney made the first color cartoon, "Flowers and Trees," and in 1937 created the first full-length production, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

Other features from the Disney Studios were revolutionary musical "Fantasia," the "Three Little Pigs" and "Donald Duck" series and development of films using real-life as well as cartoon characters, the most recent of which was "Alice in Wonderland."

It is certain that the land of make-believe Alice entered through the Looking Glass could not compare to the dream that is Disneyland.

MickeyOne gives us a review of the Disneyland Encyclopedia

The Disneyland Encyclopedia (The Unofficial, Unauthorized, and Unprecedented History of every land, attraction, restaurant, shop, and major event in the original Magic Kingdom) by Chris Stoddard is an exhaustive examination of Disneyland Park. Unlike the Official Disney Encyclopedia Disney A To Z by Dave Smith Chris’s book limits entries to Disneyland park. Kind of like the way that DLDHistory.com limits information the Disneyland Park. This concept allows The Disneyland Encyclopedia to be more descriptive of Disneyland items. The book also has listing for the more important people involved in Disneyland creation.

The Disneyland Encyclopedia is 503 (453 pages of item descriptions) pages long with lots of photos although all the photos are in black and white. The book is laid out alphabetically by the name of the attraction. Although in the beginning of the book there are maps from each land showing the location of the attractions.

The part I like is the long descriptions of attractions have not been covered very well in the past. Like Mickey Mouse Club Circus. There are extensive descriptions of Jungle Cruise (along with many other attractions) explaining how the idea came about and construction information. The book also covers attractions that were never built which are fun to read about. Including Rock Candy Mountain. The only weak point  I found was that parades and some shows are only in a list and not really covered.

Of course I guess the ultimate part of the book is on page 484 under the title of 12 Most Recommended Websites. Immediately after the official sites you will see this: DLDHistory (unofficial fan site) www.DLDHistory.com!!! We are famous now THANKS Chris!!!

I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the history of Disneyland. It would also make a nice reference book on your shelf next to The Nickel Tour and Disney’s A To Z

The Disneyland Encyclopedia can be purchased through Amazon for about $15.00 or the electronic version for about $5.00

FULL DISCLOSURE: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for doing a review.

I was looking at DLDHistory one day and realizing the huge amount of content that we have that no other site has. The problem is trying to sort through all of it and put together a nice time line of the History of Disneyland. I also watched most of the Disneyland Historical DVD's available, official and unofficial. None of the DVD's seem to have the complete history of Disneyland including backstage photos and information about deaths and injuries, rare video clips etc.

This project has taken over 3 years to compile.

We have created a full length Disneyland History DVD. The DVD is a 12 disc set  covering the full history of Disneyland. The discs are available individually or as a box set. The DVD's contain all attraction openings, parades, deaths, injuries, trivia, backstage photos and lots more. To my knowledge no DVD has ever been created with this type of content.

Our Gold members receive a 50% discount.

We offer previews for each disc on our YouTube Channel.
