California vs. Paris: Tree Houses
Hugh Allison
Senior Columnist

This month, I shall be comparing the treehouses found in the Disneyland parks closest to my heart (California and Paris).

Both treehouses can be found in Adventureland and are walk-around attractions with a set path to follow. They both feature beautiful views (including of their parks’ respective Indiana Jones attractions), hand-painted leafs and more steps than you remember until it’s too late.

When the treehouses first opened to the public (California’s in 1962; France’s in 1992 as an opening day attraction), they were both themed to Johann Wyss’s 1812 novel Der Schweizerische Robinson (commonly known in English as The Swiss Family Robinson) and Disney’s 1960 film version of the text. The Anaheim version was called Swiss Family Treehouse, whereas the Paris version was La Cabane des Robinson. Both featured examples of how the Robinsons lived on a day-to-day basis, with look-but-don’t-touch glimpses into their rooms, underscored by the lively, if repetitive, strains of Buddy Baker’s catchy Swisskapolka.

In many ways, the Paris version was the more superior; unlike its Anaheim counterpart, it provided you with the chance to explore its roots, looked more spectacular from a distance, and fitted in with the overall theming of the Land.

However, the waterwheel in the Paris treehouse was a lot less impressive in terms of its size and its ability to actually transport water.

I was looking at DLDHistory one day and realizing the huge amount of content that we have that no other site has. The problem is trying to sort through all of it and put together a nice time line of the History of Disneyland. I also watched most of the Disneyland Historical DVD's available, official and unofficial. None of the DVD's seem to have the complete history of Disneyland including backstage photos and information about deaths and injuries rare video clips etc.

We are working on creating a full length Disneyland History DVD. The DVD will be a 10 disc set of 3-4 hours each covering the full history of Disneyland. The discs will be available individually or as a box set. The DVD's will contain all attraction openings, parades, deaths, injuries, trivia, backstage photos and lots more. To my knowledge no DVD has ever been created with this type of content.

We have not settled on a price point yet. Price could change many times before we release the video. We are working on 2 versions:

Version 1: Has all content. Possible Price: $20 per disk or $100 for the box set (10 discs).

Version 2: Family Version. No backstage content. No Deaths and Injury information. Possible Price: $10 per disc or $75 for the box set (10 discs)

With Large discounts available to our Gold members.

We are now offering previews as we put together the DVD. Previews are available to our Diamond and GOLD members. The previews are low resolution working copies. The voice over has not been added yet.

We are on our third pass (of five passes) we are improving the quality of the attraction videos, improving pacing, making some cuts, and adding Deaths and Injuries on this pass. Pass four will be adding voice-over and adding The Future section. Pass 5 will be adding extras, converting to High Def. and producing the DVD's.
